The Film
Looking at the cover for the Frankie Go Boom Blu-ray, you have to wonder why you've never heard of this movie. In approximately 89 minutes, you'll have your answer.
Actually, it doesn't take that long to realize that this isn't a very good movie. For some reason though, you root for the characters, hoping it will get better. That probably has a lot to do with the cast, which includes Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), and Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls). That said, the story just never lives up to the cast's potential.
From the beginning, we see brothers Bruce (O'Dowd) and Frank (Hunnam), who are far from close. See, Bruce is kind of a dick. He's spent the better half of his life humiliating his younger brother, capturing the results on film and uploading them to the web. He followed that up by becoming a drug addict. Now that he's clean and sober, he returns to his recording ways and catches Frank in a weird sexual encounter with Lassie (Caplan). Once the video goes viral, Frank tries to hide the newfound web fame from Lassie and her gun-toting, jockstrap-wearing father (Chris Noth).
Of course, I didn't even mention Hunnam's Sons of Anarchy co-star Ron Perlman, who appears as Phyllis, a transsexual computer hacker. That's probably because a lot of things in Frankie Go Boom are sort of random. Unfortunately, they also aren't very funny.
The Picture
For a low-budget flick, Frankie Go Boom looks pretty nice. The 2.40:1 image a little heavy on the yellow in some spots, but that's absolutely intentional. Otherwise, the colors are nice and the details are pretty impressive -- especially when you don't want them to be. (Expect a close-up on Chris Noth's butt to be one of those moments.)
The Sound
For such a wacky flick, you'd expect this release's lone DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track to pack a little more of a punch. It's decent enough though, with clear dialogue and some surround sound. Given the mayhem though, I was just expecting a little more of an immersive track.
The Extras
Final Thoughts
Frankie Goes Boom has a decent AV presentation and a passable collection of extras. However, the movie should have been so much better. The cast is really good and I love the pairing of Chris O'Dowd and Charlie Hunnam as brothers. I just didn't love anything else about this movie. Good luck.
