Facebook Debuts Redesign, Adds Music from Spotify

For the past few days, people have been rumbling about the new tweaks to Facebook -- and not in a good way. However, you may soon Like or even "heart" <3 the new Facebook, thanks to a slew of upcoming changes, including the addition of Spotify.

At this week's Facebook f8 developers conference, social media guru Mark Zuckerberg showed off the upcoming Timeline format. This will tweak the look of your Facebook profile, to appear in a news magazine format. Besides the new look, there will also be new apps under the OpenGraph umbrella. The new apps allow new ways for Facebook users to communicate, relay activities, and of course, a slew of new music options.

Facebook partnered with a variety of music services for the launch, including Vevo, Slacker, Turntable, and more. However, one of the most interesting is the addition of Spotify.

Spotify made a big splash this summer, with its U.S. debut. The service offers on-demand music, with over 15 million tracks available at your fingertips. The addition of Spotify into Facebook will allow users to access all of those tracks, as well as share with others via their Facebook profile or through recommendations. According to Spotify, actual play buttons will start showing up in the Facebook newsfeed. Clicking on those buttons will then allow you to play tunes right through Facebook, without having to leave the site.

Of course, it means that friends will also have access to all of your guilty pleasures and one-hit wonders. That said, it adds another element to Facebook and the social media experience -- and the whole thing is free.

"We knew that the service had to be free to draw people away from piracy," says a statement on the Spotify blog. "Helping them to listen to even more music. To do that, we also knew that the service would have to be inherently social. There couldn't be a better place to do this than Facebook."
