The Film
Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) is back. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on how you felt about his previous adventures. However, in Eastbound & Down: The Complete Third Season, Powers is back on the mound. It's where he belongs and where he seems to be the most offensive.
Originally, the third season was to be the HBO sitcom's last -- and once you watch this set's last episode, you'll see just how beautifully it all could have played out. In between, we see Kenny take on the role of single dad, date college girls, deal with up-and-comers, and actually make it to the big show. However, just when you think Kenny has grown a little bit, he slips back into his old state, which is pretty much where viewers like him.
If you were at all disappointed with season two, Eastbound & Down: The Complete Third Season will renew your faith in the show and all of the magic that comes with Kenny Powers. This season takes Kenny down the perfect path and sets up the perfect ending for the series. Where the show goes from here (and why) is anyone's guess.
The Picture
The Sound
The first note of The Complete Third Season lets the viewer know that this is going to be a slightly better audio experience than what's been included in the last two releases. That's when the DTS-HD Master Audio track blasts The Stooges' "Down On The Street" through the surrounds, which is almost immediately followed by the rolling sounds of ocean waves. Now, not every moment of Eastbound & Down is an immersive one when it comes to the audio. This is a dialogue-driven comedy and the track handles all of that nicely. However, it should be obvious to anyone with the show's other releases that this season's audio provides a little more oomph over previous sets.
The Extras
It seems like the cast and crew really concentrated on commentary for The Complete Third Season. There's actually a commentary track for every episode this time, and it makes up for most of the extras included with this set. Danny McBride and director/writer Jody Hill are featured on every one of them, with other cast and crew popping in and out on the others. Otherwise, this 2-disc set has deleted scenes, outtakes, a quick tidbit about Will Ferrell's part on the show, and recaps for the first two seasons.
Final Thoughts
Eastbound & Down: The Complete Third Season delivers the show (and Kenny Powers) to its former glory and has a nice AV presentation to boot. It's a shame that in its third season, there aren't more extras for the fans to enjoy. However, if you've already purchased the last two seasons of this show, this one is a no-brainer.
