For years, South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have been approached and even toyed with the idea of creating a game based on their fictional Colorado town of South Park. While there have been a few South Park titles over the years, the duo said they'd only be directly involved in creating a game if it immersed players in their little animated world.
The duo (and fans) will get that wish when South Park: The Stick of Truth debuts on the Xbox 360 next March. Details were released at the Xbox press conference Microsoft held this week, in advance of the video game trade show E3.
In South Park: The Stick of Truth, players are cast in the role of "new kid," a classmate who's new in town and vying to become the group's fifth member. Stick of Truth wanders between action in South Park and the usual defying of reality with a fantasy-inspired setting worthy of adventures with Cartman, Kyle, Stan and Kenny.
An early look at the game shows the crew battling baddies including crab people, Mongolians, gingers, hippies and vampires.
Stone and Parker are involved in the game, and excited about the way it's progressing. At a Microsoft Xbox press conference, the show's creators said they're working to create maps of the town of South Park. When developers from THQ showed them an early demo, they were impressed with what they saw. "For the first time, we had to walk to Kyle's house," they said. "We spent a lot of time actually mapping out where the town is."
The game, which will be released on March 5, 2013, is rewarding pre-orders with a number of extras. In the vein of the "Good Times With Weapons" episode, THQ will provide exclusive weapons and costumes with the Good Times With Weapons Pack, which offers extras including the "Burlog Chicken Attack," "Cartman's Kick-Ass Sai," and "Samurai Costume." The Mysterion Superhero Pack will be part of an Xbox 360 exclusive, which will give players a superhero costume and the Dagger of Cthulhu. THQ is also making special features that work with the Kinect accessory, allowing players to taunt opponents via voice commands.
While the game was introduced at the Microsoft press conference, it's being developed for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.
