James Cameron is still very much an advocate for 3D -- and has the Cameron Pace Group (CPG) to prove it. Now that joint effort is extending some of its support, announcing a new alliance with Dolby Labs and Philips Electronics.
The three companies made a joint announcement today, saying that CPG would start to integrate the Dolby 3D format into some of the group's 3D content production workflow. That basically means more glasses-free 3D content could be on the way. According to the announcement, all three parties believe that glasses-free 3D can be improved by delivering premium-quality autostereoscopic 3D content using the Dolby 3D format.
Dolby 3D is a whole suite of technologies designed for the creation, delivery, and playback of glasses-free 3D content. It also boasts wide viewing angles, so you don't need to worry about where you sit to get the full 3D experience.
Cameron formed CPG with Vince Pace, in an effort to advance 3D technology through new products, solutions, and creative tools for use across all media channels. The company supports networks, studios, broadcasters, filmmakers, and creative teams globally, to help realize the full potential of 3D.
"James Cameron broke new ground in entertainment with his use of 3D in film, but it's been a challenge to bring his vision to the home and to smartphones and tablets," says Pace, who is a founder and co-chairman of CPG. "The Dolby 3D format gives filmmakers the means to bring an artistic vision through production and distribution all the way to presentation, while delivering what we believe to be the best possible 3D experience to consumers -- without the need for special glasses."
