DISH Network is throwing its name into the ring of ever-growing places that allow you to stream media. However, the newly announced DISHOnline.com adds an interesting twist - the ability to view your Live TV channels or DVR recordings from your own DVR from anywhere in the world.
DISH will offer the DISHOnline.com service to anyone that wants it. However, existing DISH customers will receive a "more robust" experience, including additional content related to their programming package of choice. Live TV and DVR recording viewing requires that you have the latest DISH DVR, the ViP922.
The new service will offer streaming access to over 150,000 movies, TV shows, clips, trailers and other content. Some of that content will come from Food Network, Discovery Channel, Comedy Central, MTV, EPIX, Starz and Encore, among others.
Using a search engine feature, subscribers can sift through DISHOnline.com's content by title, network, actor or genre. For instance, searching for your favorite TV show might get you past and present episodes, as well as special web content, and other options related to actors in that program.
If you are a DISH Network at-home subscriber, you can just skip through the junk and go right to your own Dish DVR -- if that DVR is the aforementioned ViP922 model. For now, this is the only box that has embedded Slingbox functionality, making that remote DVR access possible. For DISH customers with other receivers, DISH says that a Sling Adapter is also in the works.
