Definitive Technology Announces Super-Thin Wall-Mount Speakers for 2010

By Rachel Cericola

Definitive Technology is getting a jump on tradeshow season, announcing three new speakers to its lengthy lineup. The company says that it will soon display the Mythos XTR-50, the DI 5.5LCR and the DI 6.5LCR at September's CEDIA show in Atlanta. Surely, they will offer a repeat performance in January at the be-all-end-all of electronics, CES.

The cool thing about the Mythos XTR-50 is it promises huge sound from a 1.5-inch deep package. Designed to be mounted on the wall or to sit on a shelf, this is definitely a unit that you’ll want to show off -- right next to that slick, slim TV.

Aside from the slender package, Definitive says that the secret sauce is really the company's patent-pending XTDD technology driver. Using computers and years of experience, they took out the wasted space and pumped up the moving surface area of the dynamic driver to shrink it down. It's small and strong, and packs the dynamic punch, wide frequency range and broad dispersion that makes this unit more than just another pretty package. The drivers are also pressure-coupled to four dome low-bass radiators. The center-mounted tweeter is the same hyper-definition Pure Aluminum dome tweeter found in the award-winning Mythos ST SuperTower.

Complete with stands and wall-mounting brackets for vertical or horizontal installs, the Mythos XTR-50 is expected to retail for $799 when it ships in the first quarter of 2010. Two additional Mythos XTR speakers should be coming later in 2010 as well.

That's not the only new addition, though. Last September, Definitive first showed off its Disappearing In-Wall model, the DI 5.5BPS Bipolar surround speaker. Now, they will be adding two more models to that line, the DI 5.5LCR and the DI 6.5LCR.

Each of these stereo/front stage speakers boasts a small area, hidden flange design, and low profile micro-perf grilles. Designed as front-stage speakers, both models don't require custom Sheetrock or spackle skills to install and look practically invisible. Other features include BDSS drivers, pivoting Pure Aluminum dome tweeters, and Definitive's own Balanced Dual Surround System (BDSS) driver technology.

Both models start shipping to dealers in January 2010. The DI 5.5LCR will sell for $399, with the DI 6.5LCR coming in at $499.
