DVDO iScan Duo Video Processor Brings Dual HDMI Outputs and Oodles of Inputs

By Chris Chiarella

Anchor Bay has been touting their latest high-performance video processor, the DVDO iScan Duo, jam-packed with their proprietary Video Reference Series (VRS) technologies that can drastically improve image quality in the home theater. With a total of eight HDMI 1.3 inputs, 2 HDMI 1.3 video/audio outputs, and a dedicated HDMI 1.3 audio-only output, the iScan Duo builds upon the success of EDGE, the first affordable high-quality video processor, with further controls and functionality. The iScan Duo is positioned between the EDGE and the DVDO VP50Pro video processors.

The new additions to the vast input array include two component video (Y/Pb/Pr or RGB/S), three composite video, one S-video and one VGA. For digital audio, there's one coaxial and three optical, plus two RCA-type analog stereo inputs, and any audio can be assigned to any video input, while optical and coaxial outs are also provided for connections to audio/video receivers without HDMI inputs. The iScan Duo automatically detects the optimum output for a connected display, and can be adjusted for custom resolutions, up to 1080p60/1080p24, and PC formats up to 1920x1200, with 35 built-in test patterns.

The front panel offers handy controls plus a two-line/20-character display.

Among the many VRS features are Precision Deinterlacing (motion- and edge-adaptive), Progressive Re-Processing (PReP, which undoes inferior deinterlacing performed by source components), Precision Video Scaling II (upscales all sources to 1080p at 10 bits), Mosquito Noise Reduction (for compressed SD/HD signals), Fine Detail Enhancement and adjustable Edge Enhancement.

Progressive Cadence Detection and Right Rate framerate conversion enable 24Hz and 25Hz output from film-based content at 480p, 576p, 720p and 1080p, Precision A/V Lipsync eliminates audio lag, AutoVFR offers automatic video format routing for the component video inputs, and Auto CUE-C removes MPEG-related chroma artifacts. In addition, Game Mode assures critical low latency with less than one frame of delay.

If your gear doesn't fit in here, you probably don't need it.

The iScan Duo processor can be controlled with its dedicated IR remote, front panel controls or via the RS-232 serial port. A pair of 12V triggers can control other components such as screens and projectors. The mini USB port allows connection to a PC or Mac for firmware upgrades, and a rack-mounting kit is included. The videophile iScan Duo is shipping now, at an extremely attractive suggested retail price of $1,299.
