We've talked at length about the number of movies out (and coming soon) that include a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. At last count, there were over 200 titles, with more being announced all the time. Now, it's looking like DTS:X wants to play a little catch-up.
Lionsgate Films has announced three theatrcal releases that will feature the immersive audio format. The first title is American Ultra, which is currently in theaters now. The comedy stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Topher Grace.
Next, Sicario will include DTS:X, when it's released on September 18. The crime thriller has Emily Blunt as an FBI agent working to bring down a drug lord. Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin and Victor Garber also star.
And finally, the format should get a huge push when The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is unleashed on November 13. The big finale to the mega-franchise will bring back Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymore Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland.
All three of the films have been (or will be) mixed using the DTS MDA Creator Tool, which is the company's license fee-free, open platform for creating object-based immersive audio. MDA is the foundation of the platform, since it's what helps the studios to make movie magic -- at least from an audio standpoint.
"The platform also enables sound engineers to 'mix once' for both immersive and conventional cinemas in a combined object- and channel-based audio format, allowing content to be easily distributed beyond the theater for streaming, broadcast, optical media and more," said DTS in a statement.
DTS:X is an object-based audio format, which basically means that engineers are no longer limited, allowing you to enjoy the entire soundfield. In other words, helicopters sound like they're hovering above, explosions can go sky-high, and so on. The end result delivers the most immersive audio experience to date.
Theatrically, DTS:X is only available in select theaters in the U.S. The first to get the goods was The Muvico 14, which is located in Thousand Oaks, CA. DTS is currently working with GDC Technology (cinema servers), QSC (audio systems) and USL (AV equipment and surround processors) to put DTS:X-ready components into additional theaters. Which theaters will have the tech and when should be announced very soon.
