Not ready to fill your house with speakers? Maybe you don't have the space or the money for a DTS:X setup. However, you will still be able to get an immersive sound experience, thanks to DTS.
The company is currently out at CES 2017, showing off DTS Virtual:X, an upcoming audio technology that can translate 11.1 content into a format that can play back on a traditional 5.1 speaker setup -- and includes the extra height experience that makes these newer audio formats so much fun.
We're seeing more Blu-rays and 4K UHD Blu-rays get released with DTS:X. (For a complete list of titles, check out "Which Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs Have DTS:X.") Of course, not everyone is equipped with a DTS:X setup, which includes ceiling speakers or up-firing speakers (as well as compatible receiver).
DTS Virtual:X is a proprietary post-processing technology that will deliver an immersive experience from any existing, traditional 5.1 speaker setup. It even works with soundbars ranging from 2.1- to 5.1-channel configurations.
First announced back in September 2016, the DTS Virtual:X solution will finally be available in the first quarter of 2017. It's expected to appear in products by Analog Devices, RT-RK for Cirrus DSPs, and Texas Instruments. We should also see it in AVR and soundbar products, although DTS has only cited Yamaha as a partner. There's no word on what they will make and when, as well as who else will be involved in making products with DTS Virtual:X support.
