We're very familiar with DTS, Inc. when it comes to audio technology. However, the company makes actual, physical products too, under its Phorus brand. Can you imagine how those things must sound?
Stop wondering and start buying. DTS just announced plans to ship the Phorus line, which just happens to be the first line of Android-optimized whole home audio solutions connected by DTS Play-Fi wireless technology. That seems like a bit of a mouthful, but it's certainly not difficult to understand. Basically, Phorus developed the system with the Android platform in mind, allowing those users to stream music from compatible phones and tablets to Phorus devices.
At launch, the Phorus lineup will include a speaker, a receiver and an app. All three products have DTS' Play-Fi technology, which promises to deliver high-def lossless audio over WiFi. It can also link several Play-Fi-enabled speakers at once or stream different music tracks from different devices to different rooms. That's actually an industry first for Android.
That Play-Fi app allows users to stream music and other audio to the Phorus speaker and receiver, all while having access to the entire OS. The Phorus receiver, on the other hand, makes it possible to add the DTS Play-Fi experience to any existing audio system. Finally, the Phorus speaker can crank sound over a 360-degree radius, via Class D digital amplification, proprietary transducers and that DTS Play-Fi support.
"Our vision for the Phorus Play-Fi connected system is to bring back the ‘big audio' experience people used to enjoy at home and in the office, before music files got compressed, devices got smaller, and sound quality got compromised," said Dannie Lau, founder of Phorus and GM of DTS' new Phorus Subsidiary. "The mobile device has become a central control center for consumers, and the new Phorus speaker, receiver and Android app, connected by Play-Fi wireless technology, bring back premium audio quality and make it simple and affordable for consumers to enjoy their favorite music and other audio content throughout the home or office via a simple connection from their mobile phone or tablet."
Even though the Phorus Play-Fi-connected is optimized for Android, DTS says it also works with Bluetooth devices. Streaming audio for everyone!
The Phorus speaker and receiver should be selling now, although we can't see to find it on Amazon just yet. When it does show up, expect to see an MSRP of $199 for the speaker and $149 for the receiver. The Phorus Play-Fi App will be available as a free download in the Google Play store starting October 1, 2012.
