Oprah is known for giving away all kinds of goodies around Christmas time. Wonder what she does for New Year's? Well, for 2011, she is giving the gift of a new television channel.
DISH Network just announced the launch of OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network. The new network launched yesterday on January 1, and is now available to subscribers of the America's Top 200 programming package or above. Those customers can find the network on channel number 189. OWN is actually part of the Discovery Channel family, with a mission to "entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives."
Sounds like a tall order! However, there is already quite a lineup, with lots of famous and familiar faces. Ask Oprah's All Stars features Dr. Phil, Suze Orman and Dr. Oz answering viewer questions. Oprah Presents Master Class will highlight inspiring stories from famous people like Jay-Z, Simon Cowell, Sidney Poitier, Dr. Maya Angelou, Diane Sawyer, Lorne Michaels, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, and Oprah herself. Also, Oprah plans to tap viewers for content by hosting Your OWN Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star.
"We are excited to add OWN to our lineup as we are committed to delivering the highest quality programming to our customers," said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network. "It's important to note that Discovery and Oprah have made a substantial investment to ensure the success of this new channel, and we are thrilled to bring programs that are meaningful, worthwhile and of substance to our subscribers and to Oprah's loyal fan base."
