At last week's Consumer Electronics Show, Coby Electronics Corporation offered what could be some of the biggest tablet news since the days of Moses. These aren't stone, but they do offer the tasty "Ice Cream Sandwich." That Android 4.0 operating system could soon have people saying, "iWhat?"
Coby showed off a range of new tablets that could be very welcome to those who want to experience video in widescreen, without having to break the bank. The lineup has sizes ranging from 7 to 10 inches, many with 16:9 and 16:10 widescreen aspect ratios, and with attractive price points starting at $179.
"Coby is thrilled to introduce to the industry and consumers nationwide our premiere range of feature-packed Android 4.0-powered Internet tablets," said Jodi Sally, Coby's VP of marketing. "The extensive and affordably-priced tablet line further underscores Coby's commitment to giving our customers the best possible user experience with access to the most in-demand digital entertainment through accessible and innovative CE gear."
Coby's new Android 4.0 line includes six different tablets. The 7-inch MID7042 (MSRP: $179) has a 16:9 aspect ratio, with the 8-inch MID8042 ($229) packing a 4:3 aspect ratio. Two middle models include the 9-inch, 16:10 MID9042 ($259) and the 9.7-inch MID9742 ($279), which has a 4:3 aspect ratio. Rounding out the new line are two 10-inch models. The MID1042 ($289) has a 16.9 aspect ratio, with the MID1045 ($299) coming with a 16:10 aspect ratio.
All of the new tablets feature a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and 1GB of RAM. The 9- and 10-inch models will have 8GB of built-in storage, with 4GB on 7- and 8-inch models Each one also offers expandable storage memory up to 32GB, as well as a front-facing camera.
