If you could take three things to a desert island, what would they be? Before you respond, think about giving the nPower PEG one of those coveted slots.
The nPower PEG is the world's first passive kinetic energy charger for handheld devices, and it's now available.
The PEG in nPower PEG stands for "Personal Energy Generator." So the next time your iPod or smartphone is losing power, it's actually a reason to start dancing, or at least walking. The nPower PEG uses motion to actually give that gadget new life -- literally.
It's also insanely to use. Just stuff the nPower PEG into your bag, backpack or even a briefcase. From there, it can harvest the kinetic energy as you move, storing that power for later use. There's no fuel, no emissions and no need for an outlet; it also works both inside and out.
The company first debuted the product back in 2010, but it's now available with double the capacity of the commercial prototype. Other new features include a 2000mAh battery, a hook for hanging from your backpack, and a more durable construction.
Built in the USA, the nPower pEG is compatible with over 3,000 commonly used handheld devices, via one of the iGo adapter tips. Some of the compatible devices include cell phones, cameras, music players, and GPS systems. However, it does not work with laptops, and the company says that the device will only provide a minimal charge to the iPad. The device comes with a USB cable, the iGo cable and a Micro USB iGo Adapter Tip. Adapter tips for other devices, such as the iPod and iPhone, need to be purchased separately for $11.49 each.
"It's been a long road from getting our first patent in 2009, to prototype launch in 2010, to revenue generation," said Aaron LeMieux, founder and CEO of Tremont Electric. "We stayed focused on our customers' needs for mobile power away from the grid, and now we're ready to meet that demand. Come and get 'em."
For now, the nPower PEG is available direct on the company's website. It's currently listed at $169.99.
