Channel Master TV Combines Free HDTV Channels with Free DVR

By Rachel Cericola

We can't imagine that there's one person out there that isn't tired of paying for cable or satellite. That bill is a necessary evil -- or is it? Channel Master is combining free HDTV channels and a subscription-free DVR plus other goodies into its Channel Master TV product.

We've seen free over-the-air (OTA) HD broadcasts. We've also seen Channel Master's own basic OTA HD DVR that can record, pause and rewind live TV.  However, this newly announced option adds in the ability to access what's called OTT (over the top TV) streaming and web content, such as VUDU. Of course, to get that type of functionality, you will need a broadband connection to the internet.  Also, for the premium content, subscription or per-rental fees may apply, depending on the content provider.  There's no charge for over the air TV (including HD) and no monthly fee for access to the DVR features and guide.

For your viewing pleasure, the Channel Master TV works with an OTA antenna, which is sold separately. Using that antenna, you should be able to receive tons of digital TV stations absolutely free (assuming you are close enough to the broadcast towers). The amount of channels you get will depend on your location and on your antenna.  To see what's available in your area and what kind of antenna you'll need, check www.TVFool.com or www.AntennaWeb.org (or both!).

As we mentioned, this solution does include basic DVR functionality, with none of the fees. And just because it's free, doesn't mean you'll only be able to save one show at a time. The Channel Master TV has a 320GB hard drive on board, meaning you can save about 35 hours of HD programming or up to 150 hours of the standard-def stuff. The dual on-board ATSC tuners allow you to record one channel while watching another, or record two programs on different channels and watch a third previously recorded show.  You can schedule timer-based recordings through the on-screen Electronic Program Guide (EPG) with Picture in Guide and search the guide listings if you're looking for something specific.

Besides the aforementioned VUDU, Channel Master TV features a growing list of OTT web content, such as AC360, Mike & Mike, MTV news, Associated Press, and more. Users can also use the device to stream personal videos, photos, and music from a networked computer.

Just last week, TiVo announced a similar solution, using the company's Premiere DVR. However, TiVo does require a $9.99 monthly fee to take advantage of the guide and exclusive TiVo DVR features.  The Channel Master solution is completely free from monthly fees for over the air content.

"This is a one-of-a-kind solution," says Joe Bingochea, Channel Master's VP of marketing. "No device today offers integrated web content, free broadcast TV and DVR without a monthly subscription.

"The average pay TV subscriber in the US pays approximately $74 per month," Bingochea added. "Consumers are often left feeling like they are paying for far more than they are getting, or even need. With Channel Master TV, consumers have the luxury of choosing what they want, when they want it."

Hang in there; you only have a few more TV bills to pay. The Channel Master TV should start shipping on November 1, with an MSRP of $399.
