Considered by Panasonic to be an evolution as profound as black-and-white to color or the CRT to flat screen, to move from 2D video to 3D full 1080p might just be The Next Big Thing. They even have the motto all ready to go: "You've stepped up to HD, now step into 3D."
Proposing a 3D full-HD standard with no reduction in picture quality is part of creating their 3D full-HD ecosystem. The manufacturer is actively developing 3D Blu-ray disc authoring at their renowned Panasonic Hollywood Labs, with commercially available Blu-rays expected as soon as 2010 (assuming standards are agreed upon this year). Of course for a true 3D experience the display is key, and prototype Panasonic 1080p plasmas are already capable of rendering the third dimension. Chris Boylan actually received a live demo of Panasonic's 3D plasma technology at CEATEC 2008 in Japan and Panasonic will be repeating the demo for the rest of the world here at CES this week.
Director James Cameron also apparently received a truckload of the latest 3D cameras and gear from Panasonic to use during the production of his upcoming 3D science-fiction epic, Avatar. In his prerecorded comments played at the CES press conference, Cameron outlined the significance of 3D movie presentation and described the production process. He also dropped the release date of his much-anticipated film: December 18. Will the subsequent Blu-ray disc be in 3D, at least on some future Panasonic Blu-ray player connected to a Panasonic 3D plasma...? We certainly hope so.
