CES: Our View of Myvu's Viewers for iPod and Other Media Players

By Chris Chiarella

At CES in Las Vegas this year, Myvu put their entire line of stylish wearable video viewers on display and discussed the nuts and bolts of their design. One of the technologies that sets them apart from competing products is the housing of the optics system in a one-piece polymer design, which assures that the optics remain properly aligned. This SolidOptex approach not only keeps it light and comfortable, but also helps to prevent eye fatigue over extended use.

The viewers are compatible with a variety of portable devices, depending upon the bundle, including iPod, Zune, Archos, Gigabeat and certain video phones. The Standard bundle also includes a cable to work with common RCA video output of many CE devices. Myvu runs off of lithium batteries that recharge via USB, and features integrated earbuds. An optional insert is available for eyeglass wearers like myself, a special lens insert to help us focus when wearing the viewer.

If previous video goggles were like a TV you can wear on your head, then the sleek Myvu is akin to a flat screen.

Top of the line is the $299.95 Myvu Crystal, which offers the highest resolution of any of their products, at full VGA (640 x 480) and offering the widest field of view. Available in black or Amber, the Myvu Crystal lasts four hours between chargings and is sold in Made for iPod and Standard editions as well as All in One, which comes with all four cables and a zippered travel case.
