By Peter Suciu

While there was no shortage of hype about Storm Troopers storming the halls, and announcements on the latest tablets and TV models (3D and otherwise), one story almost escaped attention.

VUDU, the movie streaming service that was puchased last February by Wal-mart, will stream 3D content to compatible devices beginning this coming Wednesday. The 3D titles will be available in three resolutions including 480p, 720p and full HD 1080p (HDX). Interestingly the minimum bandwidth requirement for the 3D viewing will actualy be the same as that required for 2D titles, with a connection speed between 4½-9 Mbps recommended.

The 3D content will be available through compatible Blu-ray players and set top boxes, including the Sony PlayStation 3, as well as devices from Funai, LG, Mitsubishi, Philips, Samsung, Toshiba and VIZIO. Viewers will also need to have a compatible HDTV set.

"We are proud to be a leader in the delivery of 3D movies," said Edward Lichty, General Manager of Vudu. "Our launch of 3D today is another example of our commitment to deliver the best home entertainment experience available anywhere. There is no better, easier way to get 3D movies at home than through the Vudu service."

Online reports noted that content available for Wednesday's launch will include Disney's Meet the Robinsons, Bolt and Chicken Little.
