Samsung's 6500, 7000, 8000 Series Plasma HDTVs Boast Energy Efficiency, Improved Performance

By Dennis Burger

While Samsung was mostly mum on features and pricing at this year's CES, they did detail some of the key features of their new 6500, 7000, and 8000 series of ultra-slim plasma HDTV models. All of Samsung's new plasmas benefit from compliance with the revised Energy Star 4.0 standards and feature access to Samsung's Internet@TV content, including apps for Accedo Broadband, AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV , Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Rovi, Travel Channel, Twitter, USA TODAY, and Vudu. (Free apps should be available starting this spring, with premium apps appearing in the summer.)

The two step-up series (7000 and 8000) are fully 3D capable, with support for all major 3D formats, including the new Blu-ray 3D standard. Both series also boast processing for converting broadcast TV, video games, 2D Blu-rays and standard-definition DVDs to 3D in real time.

At the top of the line, 8000 series TVs also include video enhancements like Real Black Filter for screen glare reduction and Motion Judder Canceller to remove jumpy motion in film-based sources, as well as Samsung's CinemaSmooth technology for playback of 1080p24 Blu-ray Discs at a flicker-free 96 Hz rate.
