Loudspeaker manufacturer Klipsch has announced a bold new addition to their increasingly varied product line: It's a light! It's a speaker! It's both! It's the first-of-its-kind, 2010 CES Innovations Award-winning Klipsch LightSpeaker, combining the benefits of an energy-efficient LED light with a wireless speaker. Klipsch is quick to point out that this lifestyle product is intended for convenient enjoyment of ambient music--in multiple rooms, if desired--and not intended to replace a home theater product.
Developed by Kadence Designs LLC, the LightSpeaker assembly fits into a standard-sized can, as we'd find in a high-hat ceiling light, and installs just as easily, with no new wiring, no retrofitting and no software. The LightSpeaker comes complete with a dimmable ten-watt LED bulb, bright enough to replace a traditional 65-watt bulb, and fits five- and six-inch recessed light fixtures with a standard Edison socket. The full-range speaker uses a 20-watt digital amplifier and a 2.5-inch wide dispersion driver with digital signal process.
In order to deliver music wirelessly, the LightSpeaker relies on a standalone transmitter. The music source (or two) connects to the 2.4GHz transmitter and wirelessly sends the sound to up to eight LightSpeakers. A bundled package, consisting of two LightSpeakers, a transmitter, radio frequency remote, mini-jack-to-RCA adapter plug cable, lenses and trim retails for $599. Single LightSpeakers are also available for $249 each. Klipsch will begin selling the product on their website later this month, with broader distribution coming in March.
