CES: Infinia LE9500 Stands Out Amongst LG's 2010 Flat Panel HDTV Lineup

By Greg Robinson

Keeping with tradition, LG used the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) as a forum to unveil its vast lineup of new flat panel displays for the coming year. These 2010 offerings include six new series of LED-backlit LCD HDTVs, five new series of traditional CCFL-backlit LCD HDTVs and four new series of plasma HDTVs.

On the LCD side of the fence, LG revealed a strong focus on LED backlighting with six new series of LED models. Leading the charge - and winner of a CES 2010 "Best of Innovations" Award - is the Infinia LE9500 series. Despite measuring less than an inch thick, with a bezel width of only 8.5mm, the LE9500 still manages to incorporate LG's "Full LED Slim" technology, with local dimming of up to 240 addressable segments (on the 55-inch model).

One of the few display manufacturers to still offer both LCD and plasma models, LG gave plasma a welcome boost when they took the wraps off four new series of plasma HDTVs - a total of eight new models. Leading the plasma parade is the Infinia PK950, which - like its LE9500 LCD counterpart - recently received THX Display Certification for its superior picture quality.

With screen glare long considered to be a drawback of plasma displays, LG has answered this complaint with their new "Protective Skin Glass" system. This new manufacturing process reduces the gap between the outer glass and filter by 70%, thereby helping to reduce glare and "virtually eliminate double imaging."

And last but not least, whether you're considering plasma or LCD, you'll be happy to learn that LG has added their NetCast suite of internet-based services to a good portion of their flat panel HDTV line-up. NetCast delivers web applications such as Netflix streaming, VUDU, Yahoo Widgets and more. (Read our review of LG's 42LH50 for more on NetCast.)
