At a gala event attended by representatives from all the major (and many of the minor) Hollywood studios, as well as CE manufacturers, the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) gathered to meet and greet. During the brief addresses, Blu-ray was credited for helping to keep the home entertainment industry on the upswing during a difficult economy. 17 million U.S. homes are now Blu-ray-equipped, having spent $15B on Blu-ray hardware and software this past year. Like many here at the show, the members of the DEG are excited about the possibilities of 3D moving forward.
Also announced were the most recent Creative Excellence Award winners. The studios each submit several titles for nomination, and a panel of judges submits their picks from that list. All of the nominated Blu-rays (DVDs are also eligible) were released in 2009. The winners represent a mix of new and old films, although this year's crop shows a strong emphasis on fantasy and science fiction:
