CES: Apex Digital LD60286 and 46286 LCDs Herald Manufacturer's Return to U.S. Market

By Chris Chiarella

Apex Digital, the Chinese manufacturer whose low-priced (and, in some cases, Macrovision-busting) DVD players made a splash at Wal-Mart and elsewhere several years ago, greatly expediting the success of the previous-gen format, has been quiet of late, and curious CE market watchers have wondered what would come next. At a well-stocked booth in the North Hall at the 2010 Consumer Show, our questions might finally have been answered.

A multitude of working prototype high-definition LCDs were on display, the pair of flagship models receiving their own prominent wall. The Apex Digital LD60286 60-inch Widescreen (16:9) 120Hz 1080p HD LCD Television is the absolute top of the line. It offers four 4 HDMI inputs (in addition to component, S-video and composite) to feed the 120Hz 1,920 x 1,080 LCD panel, with a dynamic contrast ratio of 50,000:1 and a reported viewing angle of 176 degrees side-to-side as well as up-and-down, and a mere four-millisecond response time. SRS Labs' TruSurround HD and TruVolume audio technologies are also onboard.

The Apex Digital booth showcased this pair of 120Hz LCDs, with 46- and 60-inch screens.

The similarly spec'd D46286 arrives with a 46" 16:9 120Hz 1,920 x 1080p panel, but with a 6.5ms response time. The Apex business model has long been to gauge attendee reaction at CES to help them to determine which specific products to put into production, so availability of these two LCDs is still in flux.
