Factory-direct speaker manufacturer Aperion Audio isn't officially exhibiting at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show, unfortunately, but I did meet with VP of Marketing and Product Management Ed de la Fuente to take a peek at the company's upcoming two-piece wireless audio transmission system, dubbed the Home Audio Link.
HAL, as it's known for short, consists of two pieces -- a transmitter and a receiver -- each of which looks like a fairly standard USB dongle. The system promises uncompressed (although not-quite-CD-quality), 14-bit, 48 kHz audio transmission up to 100 feet with sophisticated real-time error correction.
According to de la Fuente, the most logical application is hooking the Send unit to a desktop or laptop computer and the receiver to a home audio system in another part of the house, but it also works with portable audio devices and smart phones, and given the simple flexibility of the system it can honestly be used for just about any sort of wireless audio streaming -- connecting a subwoofer wirelessly, for example. The possibilities are nearly limitless.
Look for HAL to begin shipping in February for $149 for a transmitter/receiver pair (Douglas Rain's voice saying, "I'm sorry Dave. I can't do that" not included). Up to two additional receivers can be added to the system for a total of three zones; receivers will be available separately for $79 apiece.
