Boxee Sheds Box, Gets Built Inside ViewSonic HDTV

By Enid Burns

Boxee, a set top box from D-Link that streams content from entertainment media sites such as Netflix, Vudu, CBS, Pandora and other sources, just shed its box form factor for integration into a ViewSonic connected HDTV. The set is ViewSonic's first connected TV featuring the streaming media service.

ViewSonic's 46-inch TV, which is due out later this year, is powered by an Intel Atom CE4100 chip to enable it to deliver the full Boxee experience as you would see with the set top box. The set is capable of full HD 1080p resolution and includes a web browser supporting accelerated Adobe Flash, HTML5, apps, playback of local and online content as well as other functions.

A TV equipped with Boxee's technology means viewers can access shows, movies, video, music, and photos from the Internet on their set. Browsing can stray to sites such as YouTube for video, and enables social networking activities such as the ability to exchange recommendations with friends on Facebook, Twitter, and Google Buzz.

Details on the 46-inch set from ViewSonic are slim. It exists (we saw one on display at CES last week), however model details, pricing and availability will be released closer to Q2.  You can find out a bit more about the TV on Boxee's Official Blog.
