Having a sci-fi fan on your holiday list is sometimes a little tricky. That's because sci-fi fans can be a fussy bunch. They're lovable, but they can be very particular about what they like. If you have a Star Trek fan on your list, you can be pretty sure that they'll like having Star Trek in high-def. Not too long ago, Paramount put out a mammoth box set to satisfy all of the fans of the original series, but it's also sort of pricey. Well, it usually is.
This week, there seems to be a sign of intelligent life over at Amazon. That's where we found the Star Trek: The Complete Original Series Blu-ray Box Set on sale. This box has a list price of $321.99, which may seem illogical. This week, however, Amazon is slashing 60 percent off this set, making the purchase price just $129.99. That even includes free shipping. Find out more about this offer on the set's product page:
Obviously, DVD was not the final frontier for this classic series. So back in 2009, Paramount started cranking out the original series, one season at a time. However, the studio didn't just rush to get these sets out to the frothing fans that were waiting. Instead, they remastered each season, with fantastic results.
All three seasons have the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio, a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track, and a variety of special features. Our own Chris Chiarella reviewed each of the seasons when they were first released, and never seemed disappointed. "These new high-definition versions are more than an indulgence for the eyes and ears, they are a reminder of how good television can be," he said in his first season review. If you want a breakdown of this set by season, check out his full review of each:
Now sadly, you don't get anything extra for buying up the entire series at once -- usually. This week, however, you'll score a massive discount. Remember that Amazon is slashing 60 percent off this set this week, so you'll want to order through them and not one of the retailer's third-party merchants. Beam one (or more for gifts!) into your shopping cart before this offer expires on December 2, 2012.
