DISH Network just announced plans to offer Blockbuster Movie Pass, a new competitor for your Netflix dollars. You have to be a DISH subscriber to sign up for that service. However, there are plenty of other ways to get your Blockbuster fix. For instance, there's always Facebook.
The rental chain recently announced plans to launch an app that will allow both DISH and non-DISH customers to rent and watch movies through the Facebook platform.
Blockbuster and DISH Network have yet to announce many details about the app. For instance, there's no word on which titles will be available when the app launches, as well as how many will be offered at any given time. However, we do know that the rental service will offer a mix of newer and catalog titles.
Also, this process will be very similar to the existing Blockbuster on Demand service. The big difference here is "transactional digital rentals." Viewers can log into Facebook, find the Blockbuster page, and search for titles. Once you pick your rental, you will need to pay a fee. From there, the film will play back through an embedded player on Facebook. No additional equipment is required.
Blockbuster also hasn't mentioned anything about pricing and rental periods. That said, the average Blockbuster.com rental is priced between $2.99 and $3.99. Once a movie is rented, you have 30 days to start watching, and 24 hours to finish watching once you've started.
According to the announcement, "The Blockbuster app on Facebook is designed to provide Blockbuster customers new forms of discovery and engagement around the Blockbuster digital catalog."
The Blockbuster Facebook App is expected to launch later this year.
