If tablet prices are still just a wee bit too high for your taste, Barnes & Noble should have some relief. The company just announced plans to slash prices on the NOOK Tablet and the NOOK Color.
In the past, we've heard people say not to call these devices tablets. Well, they certainly aren't priced like them! The NOOK Tablet is now available for $179, with the NOOK Color costing just $149.
Originally priced at $249, the NOOK Tablet dropped to $199 back in February 2012. The new $179 price will get you the 8GB model, with the 16GB version going for $199. Of course, both models have expandable storage (up to 32GB) via a microSD slot.
The NOOK Tablet is an e-reader, with access to millions of NOOK books and magazines. Of course, the real hook on this NOOK is that it also features access to web-based goodies like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and more. Other features on the 8GB model include a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, and built-in WiFi support.
Our own Chris Chiarella said, "The present day for the NOOK Tablet is bright indeed, with speed, elegance, beauty and a deep well from which to draw a wide range of paid content." For more detailed information, check out his NOOK Tablet Review.
The NOOK Color also made its debut with a $249 price tag. Of course, that was back in 2010. It's since dropped a few times. That new $149 price will get you a 7-inch device designed with the reader in mind. It provides access to books, magazines and some of the top video and music services, as well as email and web browsing. There's plenty of additional info about this one in Ian White's Barnes and Noble Nook Color eReader Review.
"Our Reader's Tablets have consistently been the highest rated products by the leading technology experts and now they're available for the lowest prices ever," said Jamie Iannone, president of digital products at Barnes & Noble. "With NOOK Color for $149 and NOOK Tablet starting at $179, customers can enjoy our best-in-class digital reading and entertainment experience with an expansive selection of digital content and apps at an unbeatable price."
