Bachman & Turner: Live at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC Blu-ray Review

By Rachel Cericola

The Film

Back in 2000, Bachman-Turner Overdrive appeared in an episode of The Simpsons titled, "Saddlesore Galactica". Homer shows up to a BTO concert, yelling out demands for the band to play "Takin' Care of Business" -- and more specifically "the 'workin' overtime' part."

Although that has to be the band's best-known anthem, the group has quite an impressive roster of hits, all of which are present for Bachman & Turner: Live at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC.

Considering the catalogue, it's hard to believe that BTO was officially together for just four years. Despite the short time, Randy Bachman and C. Fred Turner were on and off for decades. This live show was actually filmed back in 2010, while the duo toured to support the 2009 release, Bachman & Turner.

Naturally, the duo shows signs of aging, but they certainly aren't slowing down. The show is pretty darn impressive, with a total of 20 songs. Look for hits such as "Let It Ride," "American Woman," "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," and "Takin' Care of Business" sprinkled throughout the rockin' set. David Letterman sidekick Paul Shaffer even sits in for the show's last three songs.

The Picture

This 1080i 1.78:1 transfer isn't as good as some of the others that we've seen from Eagle Rock, but it's decent for a live show. Most notably, there's a nice shiny glaze on Bachman's guitar, which has a rich color to it. Also, his sparkly t-shirt is a real standout. Detail on faces is also nice. Overall, fans should be pleased at this effort.

The Sound

Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0 are the offerings here, which is surprising and kind of disappointing. Eagle Rock is well known for throwing in DTS-HD Master Audio and LPCM options on almost every release, so it's confusing as to why they'd only go DD for this one. It's a shame because the performance seems pretty rocking; it would be nice to have the technology to match that.

The Extras

It should be noted that this disc has no main menu. If you want to cycle through songs, you're going to have to do it manually. There's not much to get at anyway, since Eagle Rock hasn't included any extras. This release seems crying out for a "Behind the Music"-style featurette. Nope. There aren't even any extra tracks.

Final Thoughts

If you're a fan of Bachman-Turn Overdrive, this is an excellent purchase. I'd be hard pressed to find a non-fan willing to pick this up, given the sub-par image and audio and non-existent extras. That said, Bachman & Turner: Live at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC is actually kind of an energetic, fun viewing experience.
