Axiom Audio Unleashes VP160 Center Channel Speaker

By Rachel Cericola

While we don't typically condone inviting monsters into the home, we're going to have to make an exception here. Axiom Audio just officially released its VP160 Center Channel Speaker, saying it's a real "monster."

Taking a cue from the company's popular M60 tower speaker, the VP160 has the M60's same 6.5-inch woofers, 5.25-inch mid-woofer, and 1-inch titanium tweeter. The company says that this arrangement can deliver a nice wide soundstage across the front array. It also means that the VP160 can pack the same output punch that the M60 floor-standing speaker provides.

Weighing in at 43 pounds, the VP160 is certainly not for the faint of heart -- and probably not for wall-mounting, either. Designed for shelf or stand placement, the VP160 also features two signature vortex ports, which boast greater sound output from a smaller cabinet.

"We relentlessly pursue the most exciting audio experience we can provide," says Ian Colquhoun, Axiom's founder and chief engineer. "Bigger speakers mean more emotion, more thrills, more explosions, more romance, more excitement. The bigger the cabinet, and the wider the range of frequencies you can provide to the home theater listener, the more realistic their experience will be."

Axiom is currently selling the VP160 Center Channel Speaker for $570, which includes your choice of black oak or Boston cherry finishes. Custom finish options are also available.

That purchase price even includes shipping to anywhere in North America. Axiom says that the VP160 can also be special-ordered for low placement under a video display to angle the sound upward, as well as in an in-cabinet version.
