After years (years!) of waiting for Avatar to be released to the masses onĀ Blu-ray 3D, Fox Home Entertainment has announced plans to do just that. The Avatar Blu-ray 3D Collector's Edition will be released globally on October 15, 2012, with a North American release coming a day later.
Avatar did a lot for the advancement of 3D movies, but will it convince consumers to upgrade to a 3D home theater? It certainly worked on a few of you. For a while, Avatar was an exclusive to Panasonic customers, being packaged in with the purchase of select 3D TVs, Blu-ray 3D players, and 3D-capable home theater packages. Panasonic's deal ran out back in February, so now the studio is ready to give it up to everyone else.
"3D television is the future of home entertainment," said James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director. "I'm a huge proponent of the technology and very pleased that Avatar can be viewed in the living room the way it is meant to be seen."
Avatar in 3D is pretty stunning, snagging the coveted Big Picture Big Sound BIGGIE award after our 2011 Avatar Blu-ray 3D Review. However, before you get too excited, we have to wonder if this will be the one and only Blu-ray 3D release for the world's highest grossing film. According to Fox's announcement (via Engadget), the 2-disc Avatar 3D Blu-ray Collector's Edition will have the original theatrical release and all-new packaging. Does that mean no director's cut? No extended edition? And what about extras? At this point, it's anyone's guess.
"As the number of homes with 3D televisions continues to grow, we thought it was important to bring the biggest 3D film ever right into your living room," said Jon Landau, Academy Award-winning producer of Avatar. "This is the only way fans should experience the world of Pandora and this release offers the highest picture quality possible."
As we previously mentioned, Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time, with more than $2.7 billion in worldwide box office receipts. Cameron's epic sci-fi extravanza is also an Oscar winner, with statues for visual effects, art director and cinematography.
