Atlantic Adds 1400 SR-z Speakers for Height Channel Apps
By Rachel Cericola
Need sky-high sound? Unless you can pull up a cloud, a lot of speakers won't
technically immerse you in sound. Atlantic Technology is taking care of that dilemma, with its new
1400 SR-z speakers.
This new dipole/bipole speaker is designed specifically for those with height applications - speakers that are intended to be placed above your head to enhance soundstage dimensionality. At 12.25 x 8 x 5.375 inches, the unit's compact size is perfect for mounting high on the wall.
Atlantic says the 1400 SR-z is a nice complement for Dolby's new ProLogic IIz format, which will add a new dimension to games, movies and music by delivering an entirely new set of speaker channels above the traditional front speakers. The first receiver to offer PLII-z will be Onkyo's
TX-SR607, which is expected to begin shipping next month. The SR-z speakers will also come in handy when DTS comes out with its unnamed height format, which may also be known under the code name Neo:X. Yamaha already offers a height channel option with many of their receivers using their proprietary DSP system (Digital Soundfield Processing).
As part of Atlantic's 1400 family, the speakers can also be used for side or rear surround applications, as a dipole or bipole. Each cabinet includes two 3.5-inch drivers. Recommended amp power is 10 to 100 watts (RMS). Other highlights include a 110Hz - 20kHz (+/- 3 dB) frequency response, a 89dB sensitivity rating, and impedance of 8 Ohms.
Available in a satin black finish, you can start adding Atlantic's 1400 SR-z sometime in the second half of May. The MSRP is expected to run $425 per pair.
