Atlantic Technology Debuts SB-900DF Down-Firing Subwoofer

By Rachel Cericola

Not all subwoofers are easy to place. Some can be extremely cumbersome, making it difficult to find the perfect spot in the room. Of course, you also want to position that subwoofer just so for the right amount of rumble -- at least the good kind.

Now, Atlantic Technology is making the placement process a little easier, with the announcement of the SB-900DF Subwoofer. The SB-900DF may sound familiar (literally). That's because it's a down-firing version of the company's original SB-900 front-firing subwoofer.

That extra DF means that you can squeeze this sub into some pretty tight spots, which includes sneaking it in behind furniture. Because the woofer and bass vent on the bottom of the speaker cabinet, listeners don't have to worry about muffled sound, even when you're camped out on the couch that conceals the unit.

At 10-7/8 inches wide, 13-1/8 inches high and 13-1/16 inches deep, the SB-900DF is pretty compact. However, it manages to pack in an 8-inch long-excursion woofer, a tuned bass port and 125-watt power amplifier.

Promising a frequency response of 32 to 200 Hz (±3 dB), the SB-900DF has been rated with a peak output of 102 dB SPL in a 2000 cubic foot room. Other features include proprietary distortion-detection circuitry, an adjustable crossover control, a built-in crossover bypass, and auto-on sensing to save power.

Atlantic Technology is selling the SB-900DF and SB-900 now. Each one has an MSRP of $349.
