Amazon Launches Cloud Player App for iPhone and iPod touch

By Rachel Cericola

Next time you want to buy music, you're going to have a decision to make: iTunes or Amazon? Both actually play nicely together under the Amazon Cloud Player App, which is now available for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Amazon just announced availability of the app for the two iOS portables. The new app means that customers can stream or download music that's stored in Cloud Player, right to an iPhone or iPod touch. It also allows listeners to play stored music through the app, as well as manage and create personalized playlists.

"Customers tell us that they want access to all of their music, wherever they are, and on all of the devices they use," said Steve Boom, Amazon's VP of digital music. "By bringing Cloud Player to iPhone and iPod touch, we now have the most widely compatible cloud playback solution available, giving our customers the ability to buy once and enjoy their music everywhere."

All Amazon customers start with 5GB of free Cloud Player storage. If you need more, you're going to have to pay for it. Plans start at $20 per year for 20GB and go all the way up to $1,000 for a whopping 1000GB. If you opt for any of the paid plans, Amazon will throw in unlimited space for MP3 and AAC (.m4a) music files at no additional cost -- but only for a limited time.

Amazon Cloud Player is also available on the Kindle Fire, Android smartphones and tablets, and the iPad, as well as on Mac and PC devices. Besides being able to stream music collections, Amazon has its own MP3 store, which has more than 20 million songs to choose from. Individual tracks start at 99 cents, with full albums running around $7.99. Of course, there are also plenty of deals to be had.

The Amazon Cloud Player App is available now, for free, via the iTunes App Store.
