Still buying CDs? You deserve a prize! And if you buy your CDs from Amazon, you shall receive one, via the retailer's new Amazon AutoRip serice.
AutoRip is a new service that offers free MP3 versions of CDs purchased through Amazon. Once you buy an AutoRip CD, an MP3 version of that recording will be added into your Cloud Player library free of charge. Users can play the music from the cloud or download it, all while waiting for the physical disc to arrive. Instant gratification!
Now, if you just purchased a little something last week, last month, or even last year, don't start grumbling. Amazon is actually offering to grandfather in CD purchases all the way back to 1998 -- which is when the retailer first opened its Music Store.
According to Amazon, those previous purchases should appear in your Cloud Player library at some point. However, it looks like it's going to take a little time. At last peek, my library had the message: "AutoRip update: due to high demand, we are experiencing delays. We will email you when we have added your music."
Amazon says that more than 50,000 albums from just about every record label will be available for AutoRip, with additional titles being added all the time. A few AutoRip titles include Adele's 21, Pink's The Truth About Love, Green Day's ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, and much more. In other words, it's not just obscure and/or older titles. If your purchase is eligible, it will have the AutoRip logo right on the disc's product page.
"What would you say if you bought music CDs from a company 15 years ago, and then 15 years later that company licensed the rights from the record companies to give you the MP3 versions of those CDs... and then to top it off, did that for you automatically and for free?" said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO. "Well, starting today, it's available to all of our customers -- past, present, and future -- at no cost. We love these opportunities to do something unexpected for our customers."
According to Amazon, AutoRip MP3s are provided in 256 Kbps MP3 audio and will be stored for free in customers' Cloud Player libraries. That means that those AutoRip titles won't count against any account's storage limits.
